Body of Law — Through life, we are shaped by various authoritative systems, including the legal frameworks of the state, and religious ideologies. Sometimes these systems affect us in obvious ways, and sometimes unconsciously. Body of Law explores the process of trying to come into awareness of the authorities that have framed us, in the context of parenting. How do inherited beliefs direct the way we — in positions of parental power — in turn shape the course of a new life? What beliefs do we concur with, and which ones subjugate us against our own spirituality and ethics? How do we position ourselves within the mosaic of conviction performed by religion and law?
This work is accompanied by a short film that will only play in the gallery space, not online.
Huge thanks to Roslyn Orlando for everything. Bec Jensen for your choreography assisting and enthusiasm. And a massive thanks to Alice Beasley for making some very ratty drawings come to life with incredible sewing skills.
