These thirty unique, pierced glass abalone shells were developed through studio experiments for an exhibition at Caves Gallery exploring the phenomenon of migraine aura.
Each work began with a silicone mould taken from an abalone shell, from which a plaster form was made. Cut glass was then slumped over the plaster, taking on the shell’s contours and surface detail. The resulting glass shells were drilled and fitted with earrings.
The amber, clear, blue and brown glass draws on accounts of colour experienced during migraine aura. A callout undertaken for the exhibition received fifty responses, some of which described these colours.
Resembling ears, the glass shells give form to my experience of auditory sensitivity during migraine aura, translating the shell’s layered structure into a fragile, breakable material. They also allude to historical psychoanalytic theories linking migraine to repressed emotions, invoking speaking and listening as imagined routes to relief.
